Support Shoreline Schools, Vote YES!
On January 5th, the Kellogg PTSA Board voted to endorse the upcoming Shoreline School District levy and bond campaigns. Voter turnout is extremely important to passage of school funding levies and bonds, so please spread the word, and remember to mail in your ballots on or before February 9th. There are three measures on the ballot for this special election. Approving all three represents no change in cost to the average tax payer. For more information, see www.shorelineschools.org

Proposition 1 is the Replacement Levy for Educational Programs, Maintenance and Operations. The current levy fund, passed by voters in 2006, expires next year. This new levy will provide approximately 20% of the funding needed to operate Shoreline Schools. Levy monies help pay for instructional materials, maintenance, utilities and transportation, as well as nurses, librarians, music, drama and athletics, and much more.

Proposition 2 are Bonds for Replacement/Modernization of Shorecrest and Shorewood High Schools. Both high schools are in need of significant structural, safety and electrical improvements. Studies have shown that the quality of a high school campus influences the academic performance of its students. The current economy is favorable both to bond sales and lower cost construction bids. With the passage of this measure, rebuilding of both high schools is slated to be complete by 2013.

Proposition 3 is a Capital Levy for Technology Improvement and Support. This levy will provide funding for technology including software, licenses, subscriptions, equipment, and staff training. Currently these expenses are paid for out of the general fund.

Kellogg PTSA urges you to VOTE YES, three times. High quality, successful schools are an investment in our future!

The WA Superintendent of Public Instruction, Randy Dorn, is suggesting private philanthropy (donations) as the solution to funding public education in Washington. Please remind your legislators that the state constitution specifies that the "paramount duty" of the government of Washington is to fund basic education. Write to them, call them, or go to www.FundOurSchools.org to copy or sign onto a letter there.
